Mary is the mother of the Son of God who became Incarnate. Mary is known as the ‘Theotokos’. The Greek expression ‘Theotokos’ has its origin in two Greek terms namely, ‘Theos’ meaning God and ‘Titkein’ meaning ‘to give birth to’. Therefore, Mary is called the birth giver of God. Mary is the ‘Thetokos’, the one who gave birth to God.
