1st Week of Ordinary Time (15th January, 2019)
First Reading: Heb 2:5-12
Gospel: Mk 1:21-28
In the Gospel of Mark today, Jesus goes to a synagogue in Capernaum on the day of sabbath .He started to preach in the synagogue and the people were surprised with the authority by which he spoke, because, they never found this kind of power with the scribes whom they normally listen to.
In the same synagogue there was a man who was possessed by an unclean spirit. He shouted “What do you have to do here Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? … you are the holy one of God.”
Jesus commands to be quiet and for the evil one to come out of him. Immediately the man goes into a convulsion and the evil spirit leaves the man. Obviously, the man was healed. People were astonished by this again. The power of Jesus who has command over the Demons stunned the people.
In the first part of the gospel the authority of Jesus is being emphasised. Who normally will have authority?
One who has got knowledge, one who has got the confidence of his capacity and the one who has been given the authority. Jesus had all these three.
With the same authority he commands the demon to escape out of the man and it is interesting to know that the demon inside the man, before leaving the body, declares who really Jesus is. If evil one is highlighting something about Jesus, then it has to be the ultimate truth.
Even today we know many instances of the Evil one been expelled from people. It generally happens with a convulsion by the person who has been afflicted. The modern medicine still do not know how to explain this phenomena.
Let’s try to learn the word of God better so that we too are able to talk the word of God with authority. Amen.
