Mary: A Model of Perfect Surrender

198

Mary’s surrender to divine call is an example for consecrated men and women to respond to their call each moment. Mary becomes a perfect example in surrendering oneself to the divine plan. To answer to the Angel Gabriel at the Annunciation is an unparalleled example of total surrender to God’s plan. Her whole person, her bodily and Spiritual facilities are all at the disposal of the Almighty. She takes nothing for herself and that is why, without hesitating but with full confidence she uttered: “Here I am the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your Word”[1] (Lk 1:37).  Thomas Panakezham asserts, “Mary’s total surrender reaches its climax on the hill of Calvary when she united herself with a maternal heart to His sacrifice, and lovingly consented to the immolation of this victim which she herself had brought forth and also was offering to the eternal Father.”[2]   Even though, Mary could not comprehend everything, she willingly accepted and surrendered and allowed God to act in her. So she becomes the example of surrender for us and for all times. [3]
