Luke 1: 26-38 – The Annunciation to Mary

40

The account of the annunciation to Mary along with the rest of chapter 1 of Luke is considered a Lukan masterpiece. In presenting the scene of the annunciation Luke makes use of the same Old Testament literary pattern with which he introduced the annunciation of John the Baptist’s birth to his father Zechariah. Obviously, Luke’s concern is to communicate to his readers an already existing tradition about Jesus’ virginal conception. For Matthew’s Gospel too, independently of Luke, contains such a tradition regarding Jesus’ conception and birth, even though the annunciation in Matthew is made to Joseph (Mt 1: 18-25).
