Christmas Tide (12th January, 2019)
First Reading: 1 Jn 5:14-21
Gospel: Jn 3:22-30
In today’s gospel, while John the Baptist was baptising in Aenon near Salim before being imprisoned, Jesus was baptising in Judaean countryside with his disciples. some of John’s disciples went to John and said that the man whom John once witnessed and was with John is baptising now and all people are going to him.
John replied, if one claims that he can baptise, then he is from heaven and continued that John is the one sent before him and he is not the Christ. Jesus is for God and I am just a friend who listens to Jesus and when I hear the voice of Jesus, I have the complete joy in listening his voice. Jesus must grow greater and I must grow smaller.
When a boy was asked to make a line smaller which he had already drawn, we think it is impossible; but the boy drew a longer line next to it, and made the old one comparatively smaller . This smaller line is John the Baptist.
We are reminded of a flower that is so beautiful coming out of the shoot and appreciated by all. Soon it becomes a seed and that seed gets sown in the soil for another plant to come up and blossom and give more seeds. John’s humility is something which will make us feel small. It was about the same John that Jesus once said- there is none greater born of a woman than John. Let us learn from the humility of John and practice it in our lives. Amen.
