John 19:14 – Behold, Your King

28

“Here is your King!” (Jn 19: 14) is another declaration made by Pilate that brings the trial to climax. Pilate challenges the Jews who are insisting on Jesus’ crucifixion: “Shall I crucify your King?” (Jn 19: 15). The response of the Jews is a direct negation of their covenantal relationship with Yahweh. “We have no king but Caesar” (Jn 19: 15). God, with whom they have made their covenant is the only King for Israelites. They are professing their allegiance to Roman Emperor and thus manifest stubbornly their rebellion and infidelity to Yahweh.

Pilate had been already challenged earlier by the Jews regarding his fidelity to emperor. “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend” (Jn 19: 12). This was a preparation for their rejection of Yahweh as their King and acceptance of idol worship. It was a rejection of their royal messianic expectations too.
