Christmas Tide (5th January, 2019)

First Reading: 1 Jn 3:11-21
Gospel: Jn 1:43-51

When Jesus met Philip, Jesus said ” follow me” and he followed. Philip was from Bethsaida, the place from Peter and Andrew hailed.  the way Philip meets Nathaniel and informs him that he met the one whom Moses and the prophets wrote about, Jesus, son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathaniel was not willing to believe, since nothing good could come from that place, Nazareth.

When Philip invited, Nathaniel came to see Jesus. Jesus addressed him as ‘incapable of deceit’ meaning an honest man and added ” I had seen you sitting below the fig tree” at the same moment Nathaniel got converted and accepted Jesus as the king of Israel.

Jesus promised Nathaniel that he would see greater things than this. He would even see the heavens open and Angels of God ascending and descending.

We are all often filled with preconceived notions and we give certain logical justifications which turn out to be absurd.

The best of flowers, Lotus grows from the dirt which is at the bottom of the pond.

Saint Augustine for instance was in the filthiest of sin before the transformation and becoming a saint for us to follow.

Here, Jesus hailed from Nazareth which was not a great place to be of domicile.

But it is the light of Jesus that gave Nazareth the frame and holiness. We will realise that it is due to the will of God that Nazareth became a holy place due to the birth of Christ.

Our aim in life should be to live a life of light so that even if our origins may not be of fame, our life should be like a flame to illuminate others. Amen.
